I have been a fan of Rouxbe online cooking school for some time now. It’s a great resource for home cooks not only for their wonderful and easy recipes, but their videos are outstanding. My friends at Rouxbe Online Cooking School really know how to create high quality cooking videos that are easy to understand and fun to watch. Besides just showing you the recipe, they also include necessary techniques involved.
Major Price Hike
I just found out today that Rouxbe online cooking school is raising their prices for subscriptions. The increases are substantial. However, I am still a big fan and think you should consider a subscription. They have not raised their annual prices since their opening in 2008 and they have gone from providing 400 instructional videos to well over 1,000 with more being added monthly.
Lastly, compared to other online and offline cooking classes, Rouxbe is still a great value. The price change will take effect on Monday, November 22 at 12pm PST.
They are raising the monthly price from $15 to $29.95 and the annual price from $99 to $239.95. Therefore now would be the perfect time to sign up for a yearly subscription and save big!
How does this impact those of you who already have a monthly, annual, or lifetime tuition plan?
This price change will NOT impact anyone who is currently a monthly, annual, or lifetime member. Current students will remain at their current pricing as long as they keep their accounts active. So, monthly members will remain at $15/month, and annual members will remain at $99/year, for as many months or years as they continue to renew their memberships.
How does this impact people who are currently in a reluctantgourmet-sponsored trial?
For users who are currently in a reluctantgourmet-sponsored trial, or who start a trial before this Monday at 12pm, Rouxbe will honor existing pricing if you upgrade to a paid tuition plan prior to the end of your trial and before this Monday, 12 noon PST.
So, if you were ever inclined to sign up for what is in my opinion one of the best subscription based online cooking schools with amazing videos, I would do so before their Monday deadline. Of course, if you have not checked out their web site, be sure to visit them at Rouxbe Online Cooking School.
Everything You Need To Watch For Preparing Your Thanksgiving Dinner
On their main page you can find a link to their Thanksgiving Dinner page. On their Thanksgiving Dinner page they feature a few sections: step-by-step videos, planning checklists and individual recipes all organized with tabs.
Also included on the Thanksgiving Dinner page are Rouxbe’s Top Turkey Tips. These top 9 tips are presented in video form by a professional chef and chef instructor and are not to be missed. The goal of the entire Thanksgiving section is to teach home cooks how to become great multi-taskers on a usually stressful cooking day.
Step-by-Step Videos:
The step-by-step videos section features videos organized by the amount of days before the big meal. For instance, the 2-3 days before video shows how to make the cheesecake and cranberry sauce.
The 1-day before video shows how to brine the turkey, make the compound butter, dice the bread for stuffing, prepare the yams and Brussels sprouts and how to make the pumpkin pie. The “Big Day” video shows how to properly roast the turkey, make the short stock, gravy and potatoes, bake the yams and Brussels sprouts and carve the turkey.
Planning Checklists:
The planning checklists section comes with 5 checklists: a daily planner, a shopping list, an equipment list, a helpers list and a wine suggestions list. All of these lists are printable so you can bring them to the store or to the kitchen. The daily planner list is organized by time frames and has checkboxes that specify what needs to get done on certain days.
For Thanksgiving Day it is even organized by the hour, very neat! The shopping list is organized by areas of the grocery store. For example, you will need to buy your turkey at the butcher and your Brussels sprouts in the produce section. Each checkbox includes what you need to buy and how much of it. The equipment list is one large check box list of all the necessary gadgets, baking dishes and cutlery.
The helpers checklist specifies 3 people and their tasks for the Thanksgiving holiday. The first helper named Bartender Extraordinaire & “Hot Gravy and Plates” Person is in charge of the wine, the gravy and keeping the plates warm until the meal is served.
The second helper named Side Master is in charge of making sure all of the side dishes are warm and table ready for dinnertime.
The third and final helper, named the Director of the “Dish Pit” is in charge of the cleanup effort before and after the meal. The wine suggestions checklist is organized by champagne, pinot noir, Reisling and Gewurztraminer and Dessert Wines and explains which wines go well with this big meal.
Individual Recipes:
The final section, individual recipes, is great for learning the techniques on each particular dish. All 8 recipes show from start to finish how to complete a particular Thanksgiving dish. On the Thanksgiving menu this year at Rouxbe is:
- Roasted Turkey with Gravy
- Mashed Potatoes for a Crowd
- Traditional Stuffing
- Garlic-Prosciutto Baked Brussels Sprouts
- Maple-Roasted Yams
- Cassis Cranberry Sauce
- Pumpkin Pie with Maple Whipped Cream
- Spiced Pumpkin Cheesecake
