I picked this cheese up the other day at a specialty foods store. I asked the counter person for some suggestions on an interesting but different goat's milk cheese. She came around the counter to the open refrigerated unit and started telling me about 15 different cheeses.
When I saw the Humboldt Fog, I knew I had to give it a try and I'm glad I did. It is now officially one of my top 5 current favorite cheeses. What's great about this cheese is it shows how we are starting to make great cheeses in this country that are starting to rival those of Europe.
It's made by the mother daughter team of Mary Keehn and Malorie McCurdy in Humboldt County, California and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in trying new cheeses.
Made in California, USA from goats milk, Humboldt Fog's cheese has a soft, white interior when ripe. It can be just a bit gooey just under the rind but more like cream cheese toward the center.
With a bloomy, white but edible rind, these cheese tastes like butter & cream. It is considered a medium aged cheese that is great as an appetizer, on a cheese plate or served for dessert.
Humboldt Fog comes in 14 ounce mini wheels and if you can't find it at your favorite cheese market, try one of these other onlinesources:
If you like Cypress Grove's Humbolt Fog, you are going to also enjoy cheesemaker Mary Keehn's Fog Light, the American Cheese Society's 25th Annual Conference winner.
Where to Buy
I always recomend the you find a good cheese shop near you and become friends with the cheesemonger who will turn you on to some great cheeses or at least he or she should. If your local store doesn't have Humboldt Fog, you can find it at Amazon using this link - Humboldt Fog Cheese.I also like my source below:
