My son turns 6 next month, and he loves Kindergarten, so I am planning to make him a school bus birthday cake. Actually, my sister is a whiz at decorating cakes, so I'm going to convince her to make it! Here's my plan so far:
9x13 cake for the body of the bus, cupcakes for the wheels. Carve the front of the bus, decorate windows and door with icing. The wheels may be a bit big, so we might have to cut them down. I have a picture of a school bus I'll give her to go by.
Any other suggestions to get this cake to look authentic??

Cute idea! Lots of school buses have thin black lines running along the sides under the school district name. How about using licorice whips for those--they'd work for other outlining, too. Lots of kids don't like licorice, but there will probably be at least one person at the party who does. Hooray for them--they get to collect all the licorice whips You could even take pictures of the kids who'll be at the party and have them looking out the windows. |

Thanks for the tips! I love the idea about the kids' photos in the windows of the bus, we will be doing that for sure!!
My husband loves licorice so he will enjoy your idea with the licorice
As always, you're the best!!

Glad to help:)
One caveat--photos aren't necessarily food-safe, so make sure you don't put the photos directly on the icing. What you could do is have the pictures printed on that gelatin stuff that melts into the icing. Most bakeries have one of these edible photo printers. They'd probably print them for you for a fee, then you could take them home and stick them on the cake. Use white icing for the windows in this case, or your little pictures will look like all the kids have jaundice! |

| Rather than go through all the photo stuff for the cake, how bout a bunch of m&ms in the window? They come in all colors! |

The easiest way to add photos is to laminate them! You can keep the photos as souvenirs and you won't have to worry about ruining the pics.
Good luck and have fun! |
