The weather has turned cooler down here in Lower Alabama. It was in the high 40’s this morning. It got me to thinking about cooking either lasagna of spaghetti with meat sauce today or tomorrow.
I checked my supply of can goods and found that I had tomato paste and some stewed tomatoes, but there is a problem. Printed on the two cans of Contadina tomato paste is “Best by 1-25-10” and on the can of Hunts stewed tomatoes “Best by June 12 2009”. My question to the board is: Should I use these of buy new cans?????? Should we get rid of any and all other can goods that may have expired dates? How far should we go past these dates?
The cans are rust free, have no bulges and look just like they did the day I bought them.

The "best if used by..." is just a suggestion and also to cover their butts!
I wouldn't worry about it as long as the can/jar looks fine as you mentioned and everything smells OK.
Your choice, though. NT |
