Events

When you have a food website that has been around as long as mine has, and have also been fortunate to catch on with the public, you sometimes get invited to some really great area food events: charity auctions, chef dinners, restaurant openings, and more.  Here you’ll find write-ups of all the events I’ve been honored to be a part of, including the Great Chefs Events whose proceeds benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a wonderful foundation that is “fighting childhood cancer, one cup at a time.” My wife and I are friends with Alex’s parents, and Reluctant Gourmet has been honored to be one of the sponsors of the event.

Aside from culinary and cooking events, Reluctant Gourmet hosts some cooking challenges such as the Cookbook Challenge, where I challenge myself and others to cook something new from a cookbook that they might never have used but that is just sitting on a shelf.  As with all the whole site, I will frequently be adding content, so check back often for information about culinary events, cooking challenges and maybe even some contests.

Mothers Day Tribute 2013
A Mother's Day Tribute to My Mom Today is May 12, 2013 and it is Mother's Day. I lost my mom this year back in March and have been thinking about her today. My mom was from Denmark and although she wasn't the best cook around, she taught me a lot about food and how it can be enjoyed. The Danes love food and drink. I learned this the few times I traveled to Denmark wi...

Merci Chocolates Review and Giveaway
Merci Chocolates Giveaway (US only) (Giveaway Over - We picked a winner) I was surprised by the responses on my Facebook page when I asked which type of chocolate my friends enjoyed more, milk or dark. Surprisingly, more of you seem to like dark chocolate over milk chocolate. I would have guessed it would have been 50/50 although there were quite a few responses that...

Best 2013 Super Bowl Commercials
Super Bowl Commercials for 2013As expected, there were some very funny food-related commercials this year and I wanted to share one of my favorites, the Oreo ad. I also went back and found some past year commercials that made me laugh. The Oreo commercial brings to attention the age old question: What part of an Oreo do you like best - Cream or Cookie?...

What To Eat After You Have A Tooth Pulled
On Thursday I had to have a cracked, back tooth extracted. #18 to be precise. I knew it was going to be difficult to eat for a few days because of the swelling and soreness from having someone in there with dental pliers yanking a piece of me out and leaving a gapping hole. So I went to my friends on Facebook and asked for some ideas for soft foods I could enjoy with...

Outdoor Dining in St Croix
I don’t know about you, but I love open-air restaurants near the ocean. I especially like funky joints with lots of character and tons of energy. Add some great food, a good selection of adult beverages and lots of locals – even better. I’m down in St. Croix, part of the US Virgin Islands, and I can’t believe how many great spots we’ve found that are exactly...

A Little Introduction to Slow Food and the Ark of Taste
I knew very little about the Slow Food movement and nothing about the Ark of Taste so I was pleasantly surprised when I learned my neighbor's daughter and new food friend, Margot, was involved with both and started her own web site selling some of the Ark of Taste products. I asked her to explain to me and you what these two movements are all about and she was kind en...

The Reluctant Gourmet Cookbook Challenge
Get Out of That Comfort Zone! Like most home cooks, I rarely put new meals in front of my family each week. Yes, I have more opportunity to try new dishes because I'm looking for recipes to write about here on my cooking blog, which I usually try out on my family. Saying that, I still find myself reverting back to those few meals that I'm comfortable with and I kno...

Sade's Soldier of Love
The Perfect Romantic Music For Valentine's Day Dinner Not to date myself too much, but I remember when I was just learning how to cook back in the 80's, an ex-girlfriend turned me on to the music of Sade.  We listened to her 1984 debut album Diamond Life endlessly while preparing special meals in her tiny studio apartment kitchen. Your Love Is King, Smooth Ope...

Taste of Something Better
I started this website over a decade with this concept in mind, "You have to eat, so why not learn to cook and eat well?" I have really lived by that ever since, so when the wonderful people from LG contacted me about their "Taste of Something Better" cooking competition, where they celebrate top notch home cooks, it was right up my alley. The three US finalists c...

Not only did he enjoy watching the Phill...

The event was called Keeping Up with the Joneses and I'm not sure if Bruce Gill, curator at Harriton House, invited me because he knows how much I'm into...

Humbled But What a Great Night of Cooking
Even as a novice home cook, I would say I have a better than average knowledge when it comes to cooking, but the other night at Blackfish, one of the hottest new restaurants in the Main Line area, I was humbled. Chef Terrell Garrett
In my last blog, Chocolate Fudge Cake, I mentioned Chef Terrell Garrett who sent me the recipe as part of my Ask A Chef feature but I forgot to introduce him. Chef Garrett wrote me and said he was "now retired and would be willing to provide my expertise."  When he told me about his background and that his first career for 26 years was in hospital administration...

Welcome to My New Reluctant Gourmet Web Blog
Welcome to my brand new Reluctant Gourmet Blog.
