Hospitality Management Career - A Recipe for Success

A career in Hospitality Management means that you will be working first and foremost with people. The hospitality field includes any of the amenities that make living and travel a pleasure; from large hotels and quaint bed and breakfasts to casinos and resorts, hospitality is all about making visitors feel welcome.

Educational Requirements

hotel management schoolsMost of the time, those working in Hospitality Management have at least a Bachelor's degree, and it is not uncommon for graduates to continue on in pursuit of a Master's degree in the field. Although this kind of education isn't required, there is a reason that these kinds of graduates make the ideal candidates: they have a strong background in running a business, taking on supervisory roles, and working specifically within the hospitality field.

The coursework for this type of degree focuses on two primary subjects: general business management and hospitality-specific topics. In the former category, classes include accounting, human resources, communication, management, and marketing. In the latter, coursework is more specific and specialized, often focusing on food service, hospitality law and ethics, and public relations for hotels.

The reason for this combination of course types is the nature of the job. Hospitality Management is a diverse field full of many different types of opportunities. While some of the jobs are fairly routine, involving the management of a hotel and all the employees contained therein, some of them are much more specialized. For example, a Hospitality Manager may oversee the marketing department within a large hotel chain or specifically with the catering staff at a bed and breakfast. Other jobs may fall within banquet services, front desk customer service, housekeeping, or even security. When you move into large hospitality chains, the opportunities are manifold and often offer great upward mobility.

Job Future

One of the reasons many people are drawn to Hospitality Management is the unusual hours. In most cases, this isn't a 9-to-5 job; employees can expect to work during night shifts, on weekends, and long hours during specialty events. However, this isn't without its perks, since the opportunity for meeting people and living a highly-energetic lifestyle are high.

The pay is fairly average with U.S. standards, and most Hospitality Managers make anywhere between $30,000 and $75,000 per year, depending on the location and type of lodging facility.
