Star Career Academy has been offering vocational training to students in New York City for over 70 years. Although its primary focus is on the increasingly popular culinary and hospitality trades, the school also provides medical training, as well. About Star Career Academy
The school began as the New York Institute of Dietetics in 1935. The mission then was much the same as it is now: to train professionals to work in the expanding food service industry of the time. Throughout the years, it added various courses in hospitality and restaurant management, eventually gaining it the name the New York Food and Hotel and Restaurant Management School. This came to a culmination in 2005, when it changed its name to Star Career Academy.
The three culinary- and hospitality-based programs offered by the school are Commercial Cooking and Catering, Commercial Cooking, and Hotel and Restaurant Management. All three programs are considered performance-based and hands-on. Students are expected to fully participate in learning the skills necessary to find successful post-graduation employment.
To this end, the professional courses all include externships and/or internships that promote real-world education and experience. All three programs are supported by the International Food Safety council to prepare students to receive ServSafe certification.
About the Commercial Cooking Program
The Commercial Cooking course is offered in two formats: a 600-hour program and a 900-hour program (including a required externship for both). They both offer 100 hours each of training in skills development, food preparation, and catering. The longer program also covers food purchasing, food sanitation, restaurant operations, baking and cake decoration, and quantity food production.
About the Professional Pastry and Baking Program
Focusing on the fundamentals of pastry and baking production, the Pastry and Baking program at Culinary Academy of Long Island is a great way to prepare for a career as an assistant baker, staff baker, assistant pastry chef, or assistant cake director. Preparing graduates for entry-level employment in hotels, retail bakeries, restaurants, caterers, cruise lines, wholesale bakeries, or country clubs, the Professional Pastry and Baking program also includes coursework in the preparation of artisan breads, advanced deserts, specialty cakes, health conscious deserts, and specialty pastries.
About the Professional Cooking Program
A hands-on course that includes on-campus training in addition to an externship, Star Career Academy is pleased to offer a Professional Cooking program to prospective students. Preparing graduates for entry-level food service roles such as garde manager, pantry person, line cook, sous chef, short-order cook, and baker the Professional Cooking program is a great way to prepare for a career in a bakery, restaurant, or other food-service department. Students will learn about restaurant operations, regional & international cuisine, food preparation, baking & cake decoration, and catering.
About the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program
The Hotel and Restaurant Management course offers students training in working for hotels, resorts, catering companies, and cruise lines. They learn front-desk procedures, hotel operations, event management, menu development, and restaurant service. It includes an internship in one of the area’s hospitality providers to round out student education and better prepare them for post-graduation employment.
Star Career Academy is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology and recognized by the New York State Department of Education. It participates in a number of internationally-recognized memberships, including the American Hotel and Lodging Association, the National Restaurant Association, the International Association of Culinary Professionals, and the Council on Hotel Restaurants and Institutional Education.
Star Career Academy participates in the Title IV Federal Student Financial Assistance Program, making it open to receive federal and state grants and loans. Private loans and scholarships may also be accepted. The school’s Financial Aid Office is available for assistance in considering funding options and developing payment plans.
All faculty members are chosen for their proven experience in the field. The chef-instructors come from the kitchens of some of the finest area restaurants. They have decades of experience as restaurant owners, executive chefs, and catering managers. Instructors for the hospitality courses are equally qualified; in fact, the Chairperson of the department is the owner of an incredibly successful bed and breakfast in the South of France.
Star Career Academy provides facilities that emulate working kitchens in the real world, which is accomplished with over 16,000 square feet of space in downtown New York. There are four commercial kitchens and a 70-person dining area. The kitchens are fully equipped with the tools and equipment necessary for large-party catering, food prep, and baking.
The dining area serves as an in-house restaurant that allows students to practice cooking and service simultaneously. For students in the Hospitality programs, there is the additional bonus of a computer lab that simulates the working information systems of top hotels everywhere.
