Why Silicone Oven Mitts

I read about this fancy new space-aged oven mitt in my local paper in time for the the holidays and immediately put it on my gift list.

How can you not love a waterproof, heat-resistant glove that will protect your hand from boiling water and according to the manufacturer, oven temperatures up to 500 degrees F. Not that I plan to stick my hand in anything that hot any time soon.

This futuristic glove is made of heavy duty silicone and has that look of of a shark or killer whale in the eyes of my two young daughters. They were surprised when I opened my gift thinking it was a mistake and must have been for them.

I love that the manufacturer says it will protect your hand from direct heat, charcoal, boiling water and hot oil up to 500 degree F AND is dishwasher safe. I’m more concerned what this material could do to my dishwasher.

I have to admit it’s little bulky on your hand. Even with the advertised “ribbed texture for easy gripping”, you’re not going to confuse it with any Playtex Living Gloves that were “so flexible you can pick up a dime.”

They are not cheap at $20 to $25 bucks (see below for on line sources) but if it keeps me from burning myself just once when grabbing a hot pan out of the oven, it will be well worth it.

I can’t wait to send one to my dad who loves to bake.

I am so disappointed in these gloves. They look like one could touch flames and come out unscathed, but that is far from the truth. They are not in the least bit heat resistant. I couldn’t wait to try them . I wore them to remove a simple cookie pan that had been in a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. I spent the next hour soaking my hands in ice water. The heat passed right through these mitts in an instant. I couldn’t drop the pan so I had to bear the searing heat til I could safely park the pan. I don’t know whether I am madder at the gloves or myself for believing these ads. When will I learn?

I just got one of these mitts, don’t waste your money. They don’t work.
Sorry BJ, I have to disagree. I really like my silicon mitts.

If you can boil water up to 500F here on earth…you have fooled the laws of physics.
