The city was actually settled by Padre Martin who was exploring for a location to start his missionary back in 1806. Clovis was incorporated in 1912 and has been called the Gateway to the Sierra in reference to the Sierra mountains. Located in the San Joaquin Valley, Clovis is in the midst of the agricultural area and is growing. The population has more than doubled since 1985 and in 2016 reached 108,039 residents.
