The Iowa Culinary Institute or ICI, is a new expansion to the Des Moines Area Community College. Located about 10 minutes away from the main campus, the expansion was funded by a one million dollar donation from college alum Dennis Albaugh. The goal of the the expansion was to create one of the best culinary facilities in the country. Check out a digital mock up of the campus below.
The Iowa Culinary Institute at Des Moines Area Community College offers three core course options. Culinary Arts, Hospitality, and Hotel Restaurant Management.
Courses
Culinary Arts - Diploma and ASS
The culinary arts program will prepare you for a wide range of jobs in the culinary industry. You will combine chef training with, food preparation, nutrition, menu planning, purchasing, baking, international cuisine, restaurant management, and advanced culinary cuisine training.
Hospitality Business - Diploma
If you are looking to be start a career in the food service or lodging industry, this two year course may be for you. The course consists of training in the following:
- Guest services
- Dining room operations
- Auditing
- Food preparation
- Marketing
- Sanitation
Upon completion you should be prepared for positions in guest services at hotels and restaurants.
Hotel and Restaurant Management - AAS
Those looking for a rewarding career as a restaurant or hotel manager will be very interested in the Hotel and Restaurant Management program at ICI. This two year Associates program focuses on training you in the following:
- Sanitation
- Dining room fundamentals
- Business math
- Food preparation
- Marketing
- Purchasing
- Hotel services
- Menu planning
- Hotel administration
This course is designed to prepare you for management positions in hotels, restaurants or clubs.
