    Located at the confluence of the Columbia and Williamette Rivers, Portland was officially incorporated in 1851. A beautiful place to live, Portland is known as "The City of Roses." Why the nickname? With the warm summers and rainy, temperate winters, the climate of Portland makes it an ideal location for the growing of roses. Numerous rose gardens dot the landscape of Portland, including the International Rose Test Garden.

    Tourism in Portland, OR

    Home to a wide array of art organizations and artists, the city of Portland was named as the tenth-best Big City Arts Destination in the in United States by American Style magazine in 2006. With the largest collection of art in the city, the Portland Art Museum is a popular attraction, especially the Modern and Contemporary Art Wing.

    Other tourist draws in the city include the Portland Classical Chinese Garden, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, the USS Blueback, and Powell's City of Books.

    The Portlandia statue, the second-largest hammered copper statute in the U.S. is a popular stop for visitors, as are the five indoor skateparks in the city. The city of Portland hosts many annual events each year, include the Portland International Beerfest, the North American Organic Brewers Festival, the Oregon Brewers Festival, and the Portland Rose Festival.

    Arts & Entertainment in Portland, OR

    Home to a wide range of performing arts ensembles, residents and visitors alike enjoy performances by the Portland Opera, Oregon Symphony, Oregon Ballet Theatre, and Portland Center State. The city of Portland also launched the career of bands such as Modest Mouse, Sleater-Kinney, The Decemberists, The Kingsmen, and Elliott Smith.

    Not just a great place for music, the visual arts are alive and well in Portland. Animators Will Vinton and Matt Groening both call the city home, as does Gus Van Sant, Sam Elliot and Sally Struthers. Chick Palahniuk and Beverly Cleary (both authors) live in Portland, and the city is home to the only HP Lovecraft Film Festival.
